A fun way to train seriously
We would like to introduce riders and their horses to this fascinating and great fun sport.
working equitation is an equestrian discipline well established as a recognized sport in southern Europe, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, Mexico, Brazil and Sweden.
It is based on methods to train horses working on cattle ranches in southern Europe, Mexico and Brazil. There are different levels of competition from novice to advanced, open to all riders and all breeds of horses.
The competition is divided into 3 sections, designed to test horse and rider, through a range of activities combining flat work (Dressage) movements, and obstacle tests, requiring horse and rider, to negotiate a number of obstacles similar to those encountered whilst working in the fields.
This competition aims to promote good horseman ship and a level of submission and control of the horse. It is great fun for horse and rider to participate, Spectators also enjoy this exciting discipline.
Our aim is to prepare not only for individual competitors, but also teams of 4 riders to compete against each other at venues throughout N.S.W.

Gill Kennerley is a classical trainer, recently arrived in Australia from the UK. She has successfully trained , together with Portuguese W.E. Trainers. for riders to enjoy and compete in working Equitation competitions in the UK.
Gill has a permanent Working .Equitation course set up at her home, “Wattle Grove” East Kurrajong. She would like to offer her services and knowledge to riders and their horses by welcoming them, to come and “have a go”! Training days.
The 4 phases. Dressage test. (novice)
Obstacle course
Obstacle course(speed)
Cattle Penning
THE OBSTACLE COURSE (can include)
Knock a ball off free standing bull
Collect a ring from free standing Bull
Collect a pole from a drum and replace pole
Walk over a wooden bridge
Open and close a gate without letting go of the latch
Ring a bell at the end of a corridor and rein back out
Jump over straw bales
Ride around a livestock pen
Walk sideways along a pole placed flat on the ground
The Ultimate Aim
To ride the horse in collection, at walk and canter.

1. Proceed to and ride down the corridor at obstacle 1 and halt to ring the bell. Rein back to the entry of the corridor. Then ride forward and out of the entire L shaped corridor to obstacle 2.

2. At obstacle 2 position your horse so that he travels sideways (to the right) along the lenth of the pole. Track right towards the gate at obstacle 3.

3. Open the gate with one hand and ride your horse through and then close the gate without taking your hand of the gate latch. Track right towards obstacle 4 which is the livestock pen.

4. Enter the livestock pen via the right side of the barrel. Trot or canter around the pen on the right rein. Exit the pen with the barrel being on your right. Continue around the barrel and re enter the pen on the left rein at trot or canter. Exit the pen with the barrel on your right side. Track straight ahead to obstacles 5 and 6 which are the side pass poles. 5. At obstacle 5 side pass over pole to the Right. Proceed to second pole. 6. At obstacle 6 side pass over pole to the left. Proceed to obstacle 7.

7. At obstacle 7 position your horse to perform a rein back through the entire L shaped corridor. Once you have exited the corridor track right to the furthest slalom pole at obstacle 8.

8. Enter the first slalom pole on the right rein and weave between the poles at the trot or canter. At the end pole pick up the cup and weave back to the first pole on the left rein. (If possible this can be ridden at canter with flying changes at each pole). Turn a sharp right at the first pole to trot or canter in a straight line back up to the end pole. Halt next to the end pole. Weave back between the poles at the rein back until you are back to the first pole. At the trot or canter proceed to the barrel with the Garrocha poles at obstacle 9.

9. At obstacle 9 pick up a Garrocha pole with your right hand and hold it in an upright position. (Your reins must always be held in the left hand). If possible trot or canter around with your Garrocha pole around the arena on the left rein to the Bull.

10. On approaching the Bull position your Garrocha pole tip to pick up the ring on the Bull’s back. Once the ring is collected tilt your Garrocha pole upright and trot or canter back to the Garrocha. At the Garrocha barrel tilt your Garrocha pole downwards to drop the ring in the barrel. Continue with your Garrocha pole

11. Continue over the bridge at the walk, then canter left around the arena.

12. Replace the garocha pole into the barrel. ( FINISH )

This course is designed to be ridden at walk and canter. Riders can use trot instead of canter if they wish. The obstacle course is designed to show the rider’s ability to control the horse’s paces, and to display the empathy and trust between horse and rider.

RULES

1 Riders will be judged on how they negotiate each of the 12 obstacles,

which will be marked out of 10.

2 General aspects will be judged on their performance. ( marked out of 5).

Riders are required to negotiate a number of obstacles at walk and canter.

This course is designed to show the riders ability to control the horses paces correctly and to display trust and empathy between horse and rider and the horse’s response to the riders aids.

The ultimate aim is to ride the obstacles as in a dressage test, showing obedience and collection in walk and canter with the reins in one hand (the left hand) throughout the test.

The horse should be participating with his rider showing no insecurity or hesitation at the obstacles.

Accuracy , continuation and fluency should be demonstrated from one obstacle to the next.

The judging of the Working Equitation should be judged on the Classical principles, that which is without force, showing true empathy between horse and rider and the horse working WITH the rider not FOR the rider.

It is acceptable for novice riders new to WEQ to ride with both hands and use trot instead of canter.

The obstacle test is only one of the 4 phases used in the Working Equitation discipline.
